Chapter Twenty-Five

…a few weeks later

“Just stop,” Carlton shouts at his wife and everyone in the office stops, well, everyone but the person he’s yelling at. The sound of his office door slamming echoes around the room but you can still hear the heated argument, albeit muffled, through the closed door now.

The two of them are arguing more and more lately, and no doubt it’s once again over Britney’s desire to merge with Malum Industries. It turns out, the friend of hers from college is not in fact a collage friend and he’s Malum Jax, the owner and CEO of Malum Industries. Britney and Malum have this grand plan to merge the two companies together and make us billions. Carlton and I are not on board with this plan, and it’s causing issues between my brother and his wife.

“They at it again?” Fern asks as we walk back to my office after returning from grabbing coffee down the street.

“Yep,” I reply, letting the ‘p’ pop as we step into my office. “I don’t understand why she’s so steadfast on this deal happening. It’s a good deal for Malum, but not for us. No matter how Carlton and I put it, she won’t budge. Luckily for us, we have a majority rules clause in the contract so unless Carlton and I both die and she inherits the company, we’ll be safe.”

“Don’t even put that suggestion out into the universe, mister,” she chastises me, poking me in the chest with her index finger.

“This is real life, Fern, it’s not some episode of Law & Order.”

“Clearly, you’ve never been to Silverbell ’cause that’s exactly what would happen there.”

“I call bullshit on that.”

“I bullshit you not, maybe we should take a trip home and I can show you.”

Staring at the woman across from me, I realize I’d travel anywhere with her and I would love nothing more than to visit her hometown. “Maybe we should plan a getaway to Silverbell. See if you can line it up for when you friends are there next.”

“Really?” She squeals in delight and I nod. “Bradford, I’d love that so very much but just so you know, I’m one-hundred-percent positive they will give you the dad talk.”

I’ve never been in a relationship that was serious enough for the proverbial ‘dad talk.’ And as much as I’m excited to meet her friends in person, I’m scared they won’t approve due to our age difference. It’s not an issue for Fern and me but I care about what her friends think, and I would hate to be the cause of any angst between them. I know Raven will be okay with it because he’d be pretty two-faced if he wasn’t, he is in a throuple relationship after all. “I look forward to it, now, get back to work otherwise I’ll have to spank you.”

“You do realize that’s not a threat, right?”

“I’m aware, but I can withhold your orgasms after turning your ass pink.”

“That’s fine, I have Clifford the Big Red Dick and if he’s flat, I have these.
